Tai Daeng Silk Mosquito Net Borders

Tai Daeng Silk Mosquito Net Borders"The Tai Daeng in Huaphan Province have traditionally used mosquito nets of thick black materials, creating a gloomy atmosphere inside the house. That is why they decorate the upper edge of each mosquito net with red silk borders about 30 cm wide and 8 meters long. The most beautiful designs are on the front and side borders for guests to see. This top border is made of red silk fabric with light colored designs which a bride prepares for her marriage. The bright colors make the atmosphere inside the house come alive." (Legends in Weaving)

We now are offering two lengths of silk mosquito net border fabric woven by the Tai Daeng in Sam Tai. Both lengths are of new material never used.

Over the last three or four years used mosquito net borders are being sold more in more in the Morning Market in Vientiane. Most are in pretty poor condition as you can imagine from years of use in a smoky home.

New mosquito net borders are becoming more rare though as they take such a long time to weave and the women don't have the time they used to as the pace of life quickens in Laos.
